Excellent mix of doom and power metal

The band has always paid tribute to Black Sabbath in their album credits and this one is no exception. With new singer Urban Breed, though, they started to turn the corner from doom metal (slower, plodding) to more of a power metal approach with double bass drumming becoming more prevalent than their past albums. Still, there are the doom metal influences heard within songs such as But Angels Shine and The Trader of Souls. The subject matter is mainly sci-fi/fantasy drawn from films (Circuit Vision seems to be inspired by The Terminator and Goddess of Chaos is based upon the movie Alien), books (The Vacant Lot is likely inspired by H.P. Lovecraft Stephen King), Dungeons and Dragons (The Dragon Tide), and even world history (Guest of the Inquisition). Overall the musicianship is first-rate, showcasing excellent guitar work and solid drums, with keyboards highlighting the music but without overdoing it. Vocals aren't excellent but they work well in the grand scheme of things. Favorite tracks of mine are Circuit Vision, A Mended Rhyme, The Trader of Souls, and Goddess of Chaos. That's not to say the rest of the songs aren't good, and in fact the album plays quite well from beginning to end. If you are a fan of doom and power metal, with a tinge of prog-rock, I think you will find A Mended Rhyme a worthwhile listen.

The quintet's debut full-length, Leaving...
