Album Review

Big Swing Face announced a new and improved Bruce Hornsby, one who wasn't afraid to "Try Anything Once." The lead track of Halcyon Days, "Gonna Be Some Changes Made" — subtly echoing "The Way It Is" in its piano work — continues this affirmation of progress, although Hornsby's growth is not sustained across the entire album. Still, the first half of Halcyon Days, while much less ambitious than Big Swing Face, starts off promisingly enough. From the poppy "Changes" to the soothing title track, Hornsby delivers an agreeable set of songs. In its own restrained way, it's a bid for commercial airplay, with guest stars Elton John, Sting, and Eric Clapton all doing their part for the cause.

Back to Basics

Hornsby's latest album, Halcyon Days, finally begins to return Bruce Hornsby back to his former glory and self. As an ardent fan of The Way It Is, there are few other Hornsby songs or albums that I find as enjoyable, but Halcyon Days is very enjoyable. This album is still not as good as The Way It Is and some of his earlier work with the Range, but Halcyon Days is a vast improvement over Spirit Trail and Big Swingface. One thing Halcyon Days does do is show Hornsby's vast improvement and mastery of his craft since he began his career, even if it is not as lyrically pleasing as The Way It Is. Also, if still skeptical, purchase the album for the guest artist apearances alone. Several tracks of the album feature instrumental or vocal appearances by Sting, Elton John, and Eric Clapton. The entire album is worth purchasing, but some of the best songs are Gonna Be Some Changes Made, Candy Mountain Run, and Hooray For Tom.

I remember watching Mr. Hornsby on The Tonight Show about six years ago, and he played and sang so effortlessly, and his melodies were so beautiful, that I went out and bought every album he'd ever made. And here's Halcyon Days, which has some of the most soulful lyrics and incredible piano work I've ever heard, and every time I listen to the songs on this album, it reminds of that first drive home after buying it, with the warm summer air streaming through the open window. Perfect.

Possessed of a breezy, nonchalant style that belies his technical gifts, pianist Bruce Hornsby writes powerful songs from the heart that touch on several distinctly American traditions: pop, jazz, bluegrass, and '60s soul. He worked for a while as a studio player and songwriter, and had his first hit in 1986 with the stirring and philosophical "The Way It Is." After that, he continued to release albums that honored his own muse rather than the marketplace, and put together various backing bands to...
