iTunes Review

Classics Live! did so well in 1986 that Aerosmith’s former label decided to release this follow-up. This time around the group decided to get involved and choose the tracks themselves. Most performances are taken from their New Year’s Eve concert at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, ringing in 1985. “Draw the Line” is from 1978’s “Cal Jam 2” and “Let the Music Do The Talking” is from Worcester, Massachusetts circa March 1986. The version of “Back In the Saddle” is electrifying. “Walk This Way” is done with the band’s full firepower. The much overlooked “Movin’ Out,” from the band’s debut album, is here in its definitive version. “Same Old Song and Dance” never sounded harder. Joe Perry and Brad Whitford had rejoined the group and obviously had something to prove. There’s a fire lit under their amps. By the time you reach “Toys In the Attic,” you feel as if you’ve just heard Aerosmith on a hot night. Because you have.

Aerosmith were one of the most popular hard rock bands of the '70s, setting the style and sound of hard rock and heavy metal for the next two decades with their raunchy, bluesy swagger. The Boston-based quintet found the middle ground between the menace of the Rolling Stones and the campy, sleazy flamboyance of the New York Dolls, developing a lean, dirty riff-oriented boogie that was loose and swinging and as hard as a diamond. In the meantime, they developed a prototype for power ballads with...
