Album Review

Bobby Broom's debut introduces a guitarist out of time — while his funky, single-note style owes much to Grant Green's Blue Note LPs of the previous decade and effectively anticipates the acid jazz sensibilities of the decade to follow, Clean Sweep squeezes him into the GRP label's early-'80s house style, bulldozing his lithe playing with gelatinous fusion-inspired production that's dated badly. To his credit, Broom curtails GRP's signature slap-bass rhythms and thick synth textures in favor of a more straight-ahead jazz approach that better spotlights his estimable talents, but songs like "No Bad Vibes" and "Share My Love" still collapse under the weight of their too-smooth over-production.

Debut Album

I purchase this album in Florida when it was released just by hearing a few cuts from the album. I lost the album in moving now I have the chance on own it once more. Great work!

I bought this LP when it first came out. Interestingly, the title track is still one of the finest uptempo smooth jazz guitar tracks I have in my vast collection. It is silky smooth-great beat, particularly great to drive to. Now Bobby Broom is a straight-ahead master guitarist. I am a huge smooth jazz guitar fan and with the wealth of great guitar talent out there, the title stands the test of time. Obviously Bobby didn't stick with the "smooth" sub-genre, but he sure as hell can play.

Introduced to jazz at early age (via Charles Earland's 1971 Black Talk), Broom took up the guitar shortly thereafter, resulting in playing in off-Broadway productions, gigs with Charlie Parker alumni/pianists Al Haig and Walter Bishop, Jr., and an invitation to join Sonny Rollins'...
