iTunes Review

Entire strains of pop music exist to explore the tension between gorgeous melody and depressing lyrics. Short-story writer Joe Pernice proved himself an obsessive master of this micro-genre on this, the Pernice Brothers's 1998 debut. The music is smart, slightly decadent pop abetted by subtle, Van Dyke Parks-ish orchestral arrangements. But this is really music for folks who obsess over lyrics: "It's hard to read a simple mind" and "Your colored eye and a lipstick voice and a cough you could never shake" are just two examples of Pernice's wordplay here. The Pernice Brothers's follow-up album, 2001's The World Won't End, has its champions, but Overcome by Happiness is the best album from this talented band.

Mellow music to add to a summer mix

If you're trying to make a mix of eclectic songs for a road trip or for the drive to work/school, then buy Crestfallen. It is an awesome song. If you like it, then I would purchase the whole album. Pernice Brothers are authentic. Their unpretentious songs have a sing-along quality with hints of melancholy that give their tunes sophistication and depth. I'm a fan -- not a huge fan but one to know that this is good music.

even tho this is not ther best album it is great stuff.....every song has depth and sophistication...joe pernices lyrics transcend the norm and these are not your average alternative pop songs. the Pernice Brothers are an amazing band and it is a shame that they are not better known.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Formed after the 1997 breakup of singer/songwriter Joe Pernice's alt-country group the Scud Mountain Boys, the Pernice Brothers did an about-face from the lush '70s country sound of their final album, Massachusetts, and came up with the lush orchestrated pop of 1998's Overcome By Happiness. Recorded for Sub Pop, the album featured Joe's brother Bob (the lone holdover from the Scuds), guitarist Peyton Pinkerton from the New Radiant Storm Kings, bassist/producer Thom Monahan, drummer Aaron Sperske,...
