Give her the keys; you'll enjoy the ride.

Merrie Amsterburg's voice may be best suited to sadly evocative old classics such as these eleven old classic folk songs. There's a bit of Janis Ian but a lot more of Cowboy Junkies -- think Trinity Session. Backed up by supportive but not overbearing instruments, her clear voice and slow pacing gives just enough time for the words to sink in and the emotions to be rediscovered. That she sings familar folk songs only helps. We know the tune, we know the context, but her voice and pacing allow the sense of loss ("Johnny Has Gone For a Soldier"), or irony ("When Johnny Comes Marching Home"), or a rueful past ("The Streets of Laredo") to be experienced anew. Figured that listening to "Clementine" might lock you into a Beverly Hillbillies version of ground hog day? Afraid of a seemingly never-ending loop of skinny, gap toothed, in-bred footstompers so un-self-conscious they don't see you garrote yourself to escape the misery? Listen to Merrie Amsterburg's version and be liberated while your airway is intact. So on a rainy Saturday when your mind drifts to the limits of your life and the implications of your decisions, let her be the soundtrack.

Merrie is my favorite artist,.. i first saw here in a little club in Boston and bought her Season of rain CD,... has been on my playliste ever since,... I am very happy to get this new album,.. just the sound of her voice makes me happy,... !!!

Love the Modern Takes on Classic Americana

I enjoyed this collection, particularly her takes on "Streets of Laredo," "All the Pretty Horses" and the sublime "Shenandoah." These are such great songs, yet Merrie puts a twist on things just beautifually. Occaisionally the haunting gets a little too much, though, and the war songs ("When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and "Johnnie has Gone for a Soldier") are poor. My young sons didn't like the haunting aspect of her music (though I did), and one asked me, "Dad, is she trying to creep us out?"

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s

Boston singer/songwriter Merrie Amsterburg began her musical career as the singer and guitarist for the late-'80s early-'90s band the Natives, who were nearly signed by KISS' Gene Simmons, and recorded tracks with Blondie producer Richard Gottehrer. Unfortunately, both projects were unsuccessful -- Simmons' label wasn't ready in time to offer the band a good distribution deal, and the Gottehrer sessions were never released; soon after, the band broke up. Amsterburg's frustrated career as a rock &...
