Interesting concept.

At some point in the life of a popular classical recording artist, they reach a stage where they have exausted the standard repertoire and look to other projects. Generally they fall into two categories: One, is to make some unforgivable world pop schlock in the vein of Joshua Bell and YoYo Ma, the second is to make some uber pretentious and obsure avante garde project. Thankfully Hahn side stepps these common pitfalls to present to us Silfra, in collaboration with the German born prepared piano player who goes by"Hauschka". The project evokes a number of fetching soundscapes and pulcating rhythmic utterences. Hahn prepared over two years to get a sense of Hauschka's playing and to experiment with improvising herself. When they hit the studio to record it was smooth sailing from the get go. One hears both playing freely off of each other with a sense of urgent understanding. This is a splended project from the two and I look forward between future collaborations from them should they decide to record again together. --Bz

Difficult but worth it.

I am happier in life having listened to this album. I may not be happy when I'm listening to it, (I'm pretty sure they would not let me play the album at the coffee house, at least not after the first 20 seconds.) but after listening when I go back to life, life just seems nicer. The colors are brighter and the geese less annoying. I worked with prepared piano in college courses, and so I wonder how they did some of their effects. This is life changing music, but change is sometimes difficult.

Hilary Hahn is amazing and I have always felt that her best performance was in the James Newton Howard score for the Village where her tonal range was shown at all levels. This is not Bach or Mozart, nor Beethoven or Mendelson. This is a brilliant embrace of this performer's accuracy and passion.

I cannot say enough for this album. I get goosebumps at the very thought of listening to it a second time.

One of the most critically acclaimed young violinists to emerge in the late '90s, Hilary Hahn gained an enthusiastic international audience and won several Grammys before she reached the age of 18. As is the case with many violin virtuosos, Hahn was anything if not precocious. She began studying the violin a Baltimore Suzuki class just before she turned four and started working with a private tutor, Klara Berkovich, about a year later. Hahn would work with her for the next five years at Peabody...
