Editors’ Notes

Over the years, Calgary twins Tegan and Sara have written strong hooks for even their most confessional songs. With 2013's Heartthrob, the duo decided to take a plunge into the mainstream. Here they're primarily working with producers Greg Kurstin (known for his work with P!nk, Kelly Clarkson, The Shins, and Foster the People) and Mike Elizondo (whose credits include Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, and Nelly Furtado). The new sound may throw off some old fans accustomed to their folk-tinted and indie rock styles—this is perhaps acknowledged with the song title "Shock to Your System." But listen closely, and the two are still struggling with love gone wrong as they ache during "Now I'm All Messed Up" and the piano-heavy "I Was a Fool." The sonic makeover works best on mid-tempo rockers like "How Come You Don't Want Me" and "Love They Say," where all the dynamics and drama play out in three minutes like the perfect pop songs they are.

Customer Reviews

i wish people would stop "reviewing" this album by talking about how much they're looking forward to it, and just wait 'til it's out to actually listen and then give their review. all I can say for sure is that Closer and I'm Not your Hero are great songs

What is this?

Seriously, what just happened? This is not at all Tegan and Sara. Like the description says, they've turned mainstream with this album and it's hard to tell the difference between this and any other sell-out diva. There are enough Katie Perrys in the industry. If you love Tegan and Sara, you will not love this. Hopefully they'll revert to their roots on the next album and realize that widespread popularity doesn't directly relate to quality.

Sounds Great!

So far I have heard closer, shock to your system, I was a fool, all messed up, I'm not your hero, I can't be your friend ( or something like that, can't be and friend are in the title). And so far I really like what I am hearing. If only those songs are great than it is a successful album. I've bought albums with less listenable songs for more( I'm looking at you iTunes album only purchase). I can't wait to hear the other four songs and to sing at off- key, harrowingly loud decibels in my car to the ones I've heard already. Great job Tegan and Sara, I hope this album garners the success and accolades you deserve! You are seriously an underrated group.

An award winning, internationally successful indie pop duo comprised of identical siblings Tegan and Sara Quin, Tegan and Sara first burst onto the Canadian music scene in 1998, when they earned the highest score in history at Calgary's "Garage Warz" competition; their quick rise didn't stop, for their melodic acoustics and charming stage personas led to a slew of dates with Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair that same year and a record deal with Neil Young's Vapor Records in April 2000.
