Incredible Ideas. Solid Execution.

Defunkt's music takes some of the best from rock, funk, and jazz and creates a mix that defies easy classification. I was first turned onto them in 1988, with the album "In America..." The late 80s and early 90s were a halcyon period of sorts for "black" rock, with Living Colour chewing up the charts with track after track from Vivid, Defunkt dropping a megaton-level blast with "In America..." and 24/7 Spyz and Fishbone blasting away on album after album. It's a shame that so much of the music of this era requires some digging for discovery, because nothing like it has been heard since. This isn't to say Defunkt is perfect. Joe Bowie is a great composer and can pull more funk from a trombone than I ever thought possible, but his vocals consistently leave something to be desired. And as with any band that really cares about its lyrics, there are times when Defunkt's lyrical thoughts become more navel-gazing than provocative -- but that's only because the group is pushing and trying to tell the same ol' stories in a provocative enough way to invoke change. I'm happy to see iTunes offer this compilation, but wish they would also get "In America" into the mix which, in my opinion, is the group's most accessible album. Not to mention home to some ridiculously good guitar wailing, courtesy of Ronnie Drayton.

Formed in 1978, Defunkt initially took a danceable approach to jazz. Although their first three albums -- Defunkt, Razor's Edge, and Thermonuclear Sweat -- made them leaders of New York's radical underground music...
