Album Review

France's brilliantly named Anorexia Nervosa obviously hold the symphonic triumphs of Norwegians Dimmu Borgir in the highest regard, and they proceed to emulate them almost to a "T" on their fourth album, 2004's Redemption Process. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, for, if obvious and pervasive influence can be temporarily ignored, there's no denying the group's formidable talents with this very demanding heavy metal subgenre (where composition alone almost requires a degree in music theory from the Sorbonne). To wit, early album offerings like "The Shining" and "Antiferno" pay instant dividends for the symphonic black metal faithful, their lush and accomplished orchestral arrangements crammed so seamlessly into the raging black metal flurry below, that a dizzying Wall of Sound of near-impenetrable, but positively dazzling, nature is raised tall. Tentative tricks are subsequently inserted to spice up the similarly inexorable remaining tracks (a nifty bit of French lyrics in "Worship Manifesto," the basso recitals and chorales in "The Sacrament"), which arguably reach their aggressive zenith on the absolutely decapitating "An Amen." But major kudos for honest-to-goodness originality can only really be awarded to the memorable gothic overtones of "Sister September," and the greater dynamic diversity of "Codex Veritas." Which brings us back to the same pre-asserted fact that Anorexia Nervosa are still beholden to Borgir's earlier achievements, but that doesn't mean they're not among the best at what they do.

Nervosa finally discovered the equation!

I have Nervosa's earlier releases, but for me they were way too chaotic and unstructured, so I really was hesitant in buying this release. I bought the Sister September single first and found it to be amazing. Definetly the best work Nervosa has done yet. I slowly and cautiously started completing this album one song at a time. Not one disappoints. The ITunes review makes numerous notes that Nervosa has pretty much mirrored Dimmu Borgir. But I am not hearing the connection. Yes, Dimmu Borgir and Anorexia Nervosa are both Symphonic Black Metal bands, but the similarities end there. Although, if you like bands like Dimmu, Cradle, or Hecate Enthroned, you will more than likely love Redemption Process. Beautiful arrangements, catchy riffs, and bone chilling vocals.

A truly beautiful and powerful release.

My favorite Anorexia Nervosa's album was their Industrial Black Metal release "Exile"... until now. This album is one of the best releases I've heard, the music is beautifully orchestrated without taking away from the most violent black metal blasting, overall you shouldn't expect some raw music superimposed over classical music but instead a well balanced and solid assault of powerful one-of-a-kind Symphonic Black Metal which delivers the magnificent lyrics with Hreidmarr's raging vocalwork (for those who care about the depth or meaning in their music). Sister september has to be my favorite song out of the release but its hard picking a favorite here. A memorable release which is definitely worth the time of anyone willing to check it out (to say the least).

P.S: not a clone of dimmu borgir or any other black metal band for that matter.

Biography

Formed: 1995 in France

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

One of the bands leading France's completely unexpected charge into extreme metal powerhouse status in the 00's, Anorexia Nervosa was formed in 1995 by vocalist Stéphane Gerbaud, guitarists Stefan Bayle and Marc Zabe, bassist Pierre Couquet and drummer Nilcas Vant, from the remnants of an earlier death metal outfit called Necromancia. The band soon landed a deal with Seasons of Mist for the release of their 1997 conceptual debut Exile, but subsequently left the label and replaced Gerbaud and Zabe...
