Editors’ Notes

Five years after her Daptone Records debut, septuagenarian gospel singer Naomi Shelton followed up with Cool World, again mixing raw gospel with the kind of vintage '60s-style soul grooves Daptone does so well. But there's a bit more musical variation here. "Movin'" rolls gleefully along with a sort of Sam Cooke stroll; "Bound for the Promised Land" bears the kind of syncopated funk feel found on Honey Cone's 1971 smash "Want Ads"; "I Don't Know" is a simmering pot of soul not far removed from the vibe of a classic Sam & Dave ballad. But all these soulful sounds are set in a spiritual context when Shelton starts testifying in her charismatic, commanding way.

Customer Reviews

I feel like they've taken me back to the early '70s! Not that I was alive back then, but seriously, this whole album is so good! They're bringing those classic harmonies, rhythms, and reverb effects back into today's music and I love it!

Uplifting and brilliant. Naomi Shelton touches the soul.

The songs "Sinner" and "Heaven is Mine" are triumphs with guitar lines that help define a new, rich vein of gospel/soul ethos which will undoubtedly be expanded on for years to come. I found myself humming the chorus in mantra like fashion after listening to the album after the first time. Bravo Ms. Shelton!

I found Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens several years ago on Itunes. I have been waiting for a new album. This one is top shelf. If you like Chicago Gospel/Blues, you'll enjoy this.

Sanctified soul sister Naomi Shelton rose to prominence in her late sixties as a member of Daptone records' retro-rooted soul/funk stable, along with her backing group the Gospel Queens, but her pedigree as a performer of both sacred and secular music stretches back much farther than that. Born Naomi Davis Shelton, in Midway, Alabama, she began singing in her Baptist church at an early age. After graduating high school in 1958, she moved first to New York, then spent time in Florida, where the greats...
