The Pride of Columbus

Columbus, which produced noteable jazz artists such as trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, vocalist Nancy Wilson, and pianist/organist Hank Marr, is home to the oldest repertory jazz orchestra in the US. The Columbus Jazz Orchestra boasts more season ticket holders than the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. In The Colors of Jazz, producer Joel Moss captures the CJO in all their glory at home in Columbus's marvellous Southern Theatre, and though not in front of a live audience, nevertheless the live takes and wonderful acoustics capture an exhuberance not to be found in the recording studio. Bandleader Byron Stripling, formely the lead trumpet with the Count Basie Orchestra, leads the CJO (contributing trumpet and vocals) through a set that possesses the hard swinging energy of the Basie Band in its heyday. His exuberant playing can be reminiscent of Satchmo himself, and his band is stocked with top notch musicians.  The set includes a variety of familiar tunes and the suite The Color of Jazz, composed by John Clayton specifically for the CJO. Don't miss this!
