Album Review

After the temporary collapse of the Time, Morris Day went into the recording studio for his first solo excursion. While the trademarked Minneapolis pop-funk sound still remains at the forefront of each composition, the absence of the magic is extremely noticeable in the production booth. That aside, The Color of Success offers to fans what Day does best, funky but accessible dance-pop music in the vein of many of his Minneapolis contemporaries. While the album runs a little bit on the short side, there is no filler and it is surprisingly consistent from start to finish. Fans of Day's work with the Time will enjoy this record, but first-time listeners would be better-served checking out his earlier work first.

Not an EP, get "Oak Tree"

This is an album, this is the whole, original album. They probably label it an EP because it is short, and cds nowadays can hold more than vinyl did back in 1986 when this originally came out. The 6 song track listing was a holdover from The Time's original format. This is an interesting, yet non-essential MPLS time capsule. For fans of Prince, the Time, the 80's or MPLS funk, "Oak Tree" is an essential jam, "Love Sign" is a joyous funky jam, and "Love/Addiction" is a light-hearted pop jam. Tracks 1 & 2 are more-or-less about Day's personna and track 5 is a slow jam about a guy who is not interested in commitment. All-in-all, go for 3, 4 & 6, maybe 1, and if you have to have it all, the rest.

We loved this Album!

Back then, this album was great. We didn't care if it had six songs. It still holds up. Anyway, who the hell is cooler than Morris Day, and how great were the 80's?

B. Ware!!

No, don't beware, B. WARE! That was the pseudonym for Morris's bodyguard when they stayed at the Sheraton in Madison on this tour. I was a bellman and had to take B. Ware to the bank. The local radio station, WORT, was playing this in it's entirety, we cranked it up to full volume and rocked to the bank! It got me an all access pass to any show I wanted to see on the tour!! I also saw Morris come out of the bus the night before, dressed to thrill, as usual. He did a quick glance around, then his wild laugh and bounded through the door!

With his dynamic dancing and smooth yet gutsy vocals, Morris Day played an essential role in the development of the Twin City dance/club sound of the 1980s. A founding member of Prince's band, the Time, he remained with the group from 1981 until 1984, when he launched his solo career. Returning again in 1988, he also performed and recorded with the Time from 1990 until 1991 and then after 1995. Day's involvement with Prince traces back to 1980, when his composition "Partyup" (originally recorded...
