11 Songs, 44 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Like sunshine follows the rain, after a melancholy Beck album comes the party. This 13th studio album follows Morning Phase’s exquisite sadness, and it's seemingly custom-built to provide its author significant onstage fun. And as anyone who’s been to a Beck show knows, this is a very good thing. “Dreams”—that mighty 2015 single—gets a taut redux and is injected with more oomph, and the freewheeling title track somehow makes panpipes cool, while “I’m So Free,” “Wow,” and “Up All Night” would make undisputed album standouts for lesser artists. On one straining with irresistible, highest-end alt-rock good times, they’re just part of an elite ensemble cast.

Beck is back

Our chameleon is back with another great sound. Have liked and respected his artistry since his Odelay days! Never know what sound you will get with Beck, but it will be top notch!

I wanna start by saying i'm not a professional music reviewer. i'm some guy who loves a lot of music which happens to include Beck. i was born in '91 and he's one of the few musicians from my childhood who still excites me with each release. i started really getting into music around the time guero came out and i had friends who were into songs like E-Pro, Girl & Hell Yes. i thought it was a really good album. then with the information, i had to find out about it on my own. it wasn't as popular as guero but i think it's one of his best albums. then he put out modern guilt and i got it the day it came out 07/08/08! i was delighted. i graduated in '09, had this and that going on and wasn't too concerned about Beck's absence. i was glad to hear the I started hating someone... EP. it wasn't the greatest thing but it made me excited about a new album. the three singles that came out in '13 blew me away. i thought each one was incredible. i dished out like $80 on ebay to purchase the gimme EP b/c i couldn't find the extended/alternate versions anywhere else. then we got morning phase in late february '14 and i listened to it every night for a while. my stepmom died early februay and whenever i listen that album it brings me back to that time of strange and really quite beautiful transitions. over the past 3 and a half years we got 2 singles, that i always tried to give the benefit of the doubt (just because, you know, it's Beck!), that appear on this album that just came out today. after hearing this overproduced, excruciatingly poppy mess of an album, i weep for the future.

Creativity Left the Building

Longtime fan and admirer of Beck and his ability to toggle the musical genre landscape. If the first 4 songs are any indication of the full album, this effort seems incredibly forced and out of character. Even records that aren’t his best have interesting elements, Colors sounds like a record made by a young rich kid banked rolled by daddy.
