iTunes Review

When Suede’s fifth LP was released in 2002, it seemed impossible for this band to make a bad album. In a music world that had fallen in love with plural noun–named bands (like The Strokes, The Shins, and The Vines), Suede continued to create compelling, glam-soaked pop. Clear of mind and body, frontman Brett Anderson sounds newly inspired. The opening song, “Positivity,” was produced by John Leckie (The Stone Roses, Radiohead, The Verve, etc.), setting the tone with more uplifting melodies than ever before. But fans of the band’s shadowy ballads or David Bowie worship can find such vestiges on songs like the lilting “Lonely Girls” and the glam-rocking “Street Life.” Aside from the album’s fetching melodies, what really stands out is how well Anderson’s voice has aged, especially on the beautiful sadness of “Lost in TV.” Out of 31 bonus tracks, “Hard Candy” is a catchy standout.
