A brilliant recording of gems originally sung by male characters in the musical theater. Betty Buckley reminds with these songs why she won the Tony for playing Grizabella in Cats and went on to be called "The Voice of Broadway". This is just a fun, sometimes humorous collection of great musical theater songs to enjoy for years to come. I've enjoyed her eclectic jazz recordings in recent years but there is nothing like this lady's voice singing a great Broadway number. It takes me back to the first musical I saw her perform...Sunset Boulevard. I've been a huge fan ever since. If you love showtunes, get this recording. Also check out her other more jazz related work such as her "Quintessence" CD. Betty Buckley is a wonderfully talented artist who can bring so much to any song or genre of music.

A Phenomenal Album!

Once again, Betty Buckley demonstrates why she is a legend on Broadway. With astonishing interpretations and absolute purity of voice, she reinterprets these songs and marks them each as her own.

'Song of the Sand', 'More I Cannot Wish You' and 'Venice" are standouts as a master class in song interpretation, while the Sweeney Todd Suite leaves you breathless in it's haunting, plaintive sense of love and longing, ending in a sinister and evocative cry for revenge. It gave me goosebumps.

The album is a FANTASTIC!

Here she is's Betty!

Can't come up with enough superlatives to describe this. I purchased this CD after hearing Ms Buckley sing most of the songs in concert and haven't stopped listening to it. She has emerged in recent years as one of those rare Broadway "birds" who seem to improve with age. Think Barbara Cook, Elaine Stritch or Bernadette Peters, all consummate professionals who reinvented themselves to suit changing times. With this CD she lives up to her well-deserved reputation as the "voice of Broadway." Her song selection is superb. She tackles the standards with style and sparkle and unearths some rare gems like William Finn's Venice. Hymn to Her is brilliant, filled with wit and fire. This is a priceless addition to her body of work. Vive la Betty!

Actress/singer Betty Buckley has starred in numerous theatrical productions, as well as making appearances in film and television, but she is perhaps best known for her role as Grizabella in the Broadway version of Cats and her corresponding performance of the show's signature number, "Memory." Betty Lynn Buckley was born on July 3, 1947, in Fort Worth, Texas; at age 11, she attended a production of The Pajama Game and fell irrevocably in love with the theater, studying vocalists like Judy Garland...
