Album Review

Originally from Baku, Azerbaijan, but now living in the Netherlands, pianist and composer Amina Figarova studied classical piano and began writing music as a child. She switched to jazz as a young adult, and has blossomed as both a player and a writer in the years since. This is her third release as leader of an accomplished septet that includes top players from the Netherlands and Belgium (among them her husband, the excellent jazz flutist Bart Platteau). The 12 compositions featured on Come Escape with Me are all originals, and most of them are written in a discursive but elegant style, characterized by chord progressions that sprawl impressionistically while the rhythm section pushes them firmly from below. "Hot on the Trail" and the gorgeous title track are both good examples of those general tendencies, but there are exceptions — such as the delightful "Buckshot Blues," which sounds for all the world as if it had been written by Ray Charles during a vacation in New Orleans. The playing is top-notch throughout, with particular kudos going to Platteau, Figarova and alto saxophonist Tom Beek. Very, very nice.

Perfection !

I am fortunate to have Amina Figarova and her fellow musicians in my Jazz collection !

For the longest time I had just three cuts. When they came up in the playlist I nearly always thought "Oooooh who's that ? Taking a look I would say " oh yes I like them so much ". Why I never completed the album ( until now ) I don't know other than trying to be frugal during the down turn and come to think of it when I bought those cuts I was searching for solo piano in the style on some of the slower cuts.

Mrs. Figarova if you ever make an album of very slow solo work, your compositions and or romantic standards, I would buy it twice over to have that in my world. I use for an example Wynton Marsalis and his father Ellis. I Love Black Codes and most every other album he made including his first titled Wynton Marsalis but going back to those standards sure is NICE too.

To any one considering these artists, Amina Figarova and her fellow musicians, I can recommend buying the whole album. All great stuff !

The first three I bought were:
• Flight of Fancy
• Destiny
• Reaching Out To You

Amina Figarova was born in 1966 in a most unlikely place for a jazz musician, Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan on the Russian side of the Iron Curtain. Her parents encouraged her at the tender age of two years old to pursue playing the piano. As a classically trained musician, Figarova was influenced by such usual masters as Johann Sebastian Bach, Sergey Rachmaninov, and Claude Debussy, and played scores of Alexander Scriabin. But her mother and father loved jazz, and she was fortunate to be...
