Herb Still Has It!

It amazes me how Herb Alpert keeps putting out music that is fresh to the ears. He may not be the greatest trumpet player in the world, but the man knows how to make a record. On this album Alpert combines some classic tunes with his own originals that has a great balance. The title track, complete with steel drums, takes you on a vicarious trip to the Caribbean. Some witty scat vocals to accompany his solo just makes you smile. The Caribbean feel is also evident on the Alpert originals "Walkin' Tall" and the grooving "Cheeky" (my favorite track). Herb even takes a lyrical approach to George Harrison's "Something", and displays his mastery of ballads on "Danny Boy". Herb Alpert may be an 80 year-old man, but he proves that he still has something relevant to say in today's music world. A total delight!

Quite a Train Ride!

One of the most unusual renditions of Strayhorn’s masterpiece. Not sure I love it, but I did love the cool train whistle sounds. I applaud the originality.

Sit back, relax, enjoy!

What a treat. I have missed Herb's horn and tasty arrangements. As usual, this LP does not disappoint. It is perfect for my Sat/Sun morning "ease into the day" music. Nice mix of up tempo and medium/slow tempo tunes. I really love "Cheeky". Can't seem to find the digital notes that should've downloaded- so I can't remark on the musicians by name. Too bad. They complement Herb superbly. Bravo!

One of the most successful instrumental performers in pop history, trumpeter Herb Alpert was also one of the entertainment industry's shrewdest businessmen: A&M, the label he co-founded with partner Jerry Moss, ranks among the most prosperous artist-owned companies ever established. Born March 31, 1935 in Los Angeles, Alpert began playing the trumpet at the age of eight. After serving in the Army, he attempted to forge an acting career, but soon returned to music, recording under the name Dore Alpert...
