These are re-recordings and poorly done!!!!

No doubt these are re-recordings. Spoke to Pat Vegas of the original group, they just sang on these things some studio guys in Minneapolis recorded the tracks. Wait for the originals - they'll be up on Itunes soon.

Compared to the original singles on the Epic label, these are obviously re-recordings, which is K-Tel's specialty these days. And maybe try reading the above CD cover: "All selections are new stereo recordings performed by one or more members of the original group." So you can save money with this CD, or pay tribute to the late Lolly Vegas by purchasing the ORIGINAL VERSIONS on the "Essential" CD [also available on iTunes].

Redbone covering Redbone?

This is truly an odd experience... almost like Redbone doing weak cover versions of Redbone. No slight on the original guys involved here - their vocals are the only thing that save this. The music is definitely not the original stuff, and *then* you hear the distinctive vocals. I own every Redbone album except 1978's "Cycles" and for the most part, the music here is devoid of any life or spirit. It's not bad - it's just dead. Redbone music should be played by musicians who LOVE Redbone music and would busk it in the streets for spare change... this is Karioke background at best. But man, that singing is still them and saves it as best it can.

Bought "Wovoka" and that's it. By all means, get "Essentials" for the real thing but there's so much more rich Redbone music from their entire catalogue that a single CD can't hope to fit in. But until all their albums are re-released... it'll have to do.

Redbone was a Los Angeles-based band led by Native American Pat and Lolly Vegas, both lead singers who had previously worked under their own names, appearing in the 1965 film It's a Bikini World prior to forming Redbone, an all-Native band, at the encouragement of Jimi Hendrix. Their first success with Redbone came in 1970 with "Maggie" on Epic. "The Witch Queen of New Orleans" did somewhat better the next year, and "Come and Get Your Love" — a single that peaked at number five on the Billboard...
