iTunes Review

England’s Unicorn played California-tinged country rock that contended with bands like Poco, Bread, Pure Prairie League, New Riders of the Purple Sage and post-Parsons Flying Burrito Brothers. Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour produced three of their albums and played pedal steel on a handful of songs. He also covered Unicorn’s “No Way Out Of Here” on his 1978 eponymous solo debut. The cream of this anthology comes from Unicorn’s 1974 album Blue Pine Trees and 1976’s Too Many Crooks starting with “Holland,” a catchy country-rock song that sounds like Ian Matthews fronting the Eagles. “Sleep Song” may be the best tune here as it plays like what Tom Petty might have been doing in between Mudcrutch and the Heartbreakers — not to mention that it’s easily the best tune about a dentist ever recorded. Although their epic “115 Bar Joy” and their gauzy cover of Neil Young’s “I’ve Loved Her So Long” from 1971’s Uphill All the Way are strangely absent, “Autumn Wine” more than makes up for it with gossamer harmonies akin to those of CSN&Y.
