iTunes Review

Mary Chapin Carpenter maintained a careful balancing act during her ‘90s heyday as a mainstream country act. She recorded enough radio-oriented tunes to provide her with hits while rounding out her albums with more subtle and personal material. Come On Come On achieved the best marriage of the two strains in Carpenter’s work — the hits here are bright and catchy, while the album cuts deserve a close listening. Just about anyone who listened to Top 40 country stations in those days remembers “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” “I Feel Lucky,” and “Passionate Kisses” fondly — Carpenter’s rendition of the last-named song is especially sensitive and uplifting. Those who went beyond the hits discovered exquisitely penned tunes like “I Am a Town” (a poignant panorama of rural America) and the title song (a haunting invocation of memory and desire). Carpenter is particularly effective as a singer of wistful tunes like these — her truer colors come out as her mood darkens.

Not a fan of country, but I can stomach this

its funny I'm the first review, I used to listen to this tape in the car with my dad all the time, I never liked it as much as he did, but I can say now that I don't mind it. I really like "the bug", and I used to love "I feel lucky"

Country/Folk - Love her voice

Had no idea who MCC was until my cousins chose a selection from this album to play at my uncle's funeral; her voice grabbed me immediately. I am by no means a country fan, but this album is fantastic; since then I've purchased more MCC, including her Christmas album, and I'm getting ready to buy the newer one - The Calling. On this album, she more than credibly covers Dire Straits (The Bug), and her version of Passionate Kisses, though written by Lucinda Williams, first brought that song to my attention. When she's not covering (Come On, Come On, I Am a Town) she's setting some very beautiful poetry to equally gorgeous music - all that and she attended Princeton Day School, The Taft School and Brown University. Go Girl!

Great memories

My mother is a New Yorker with a love of good country. She bought this album when I was in high school and I fell in love with it. We sang it together and it still affects me when I listen to it today. I don't listen to a whole lot of country, but this is special on many levels. Just wonderful.
