21st Century Gold-medal Barbershop Harmony at its absolute finest

Writing as a 7-year member of the Bridgeport, CT, USA chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, and bass singer of a soon-to-be registered quartet The Jetsetters, let me say that this is the top three barbershop quartet records ever since I joined. The other two belong to 1996 champs Gas House Gang and 2006 champs Vocal Spectrum. Let me speak of one song on this record in particular: The chorus to Story of the Rose (Heart of My Heart) is one that each and every one of the 17,000+ male barbershoppers learns the instant he joins--albeit a much, much, much simpler version dating back to the 1890's:-) Not only that, but there are many barbershop chapters who on 14 February each year send tuxcedo-clad quartets out armed with a card and a rose (single or dozen) to pretty much anywhere the customers ask. They sing either Heart of My Heart or one other -- but because of airtight scheduling, logistics, and a sincere desire not to ruin the impact, usually no more. Getting back to Realtime now--their debut record, Four Brothers, as powerfully great as it was, suffered because of improper mixing. Not so this record, I'm happy to write. The man at the controls is none other than Tony DeRosa, diminutive Phil Collins-esque lead of 2005 silver medalist quartet Max Q. Jazzy, breezy, young, literate, and bright. This is truly the work of 4 musical brothers from Vancouver (WA and BC).

I seem to give a lot of four-star reviews, but...

Okay. This was one of the most anticipated albums for me personally. I was slightly disappointed as a barbershopper due to not many barbershop tunes on here. The first Realtime CD had about the same balance, but there is something about the arrangements on here that makes me not care for the non-barbershop tunes as much as their first CD. That said, the barbershop tunes are, in a word, amazing. As for the non-barbershop tunes, One Note Samba is really great.
