Editors’ Notes

Trained in bebop but comfortably versed in a number of instrumental genres, pianist Ramsey Lewis tossed equal parts traditional jazz, funk, soul, pop, and easy listening into a jigger, shook, and served chilled. The resulting cocktail, fizzy with flavor and blissfully intoxicating, married the traditional bebop sound of his youth with the fast-changing musical landscape of the period. Lewis was lauded for his foresight, and The In Crowd, his very best work, is often seen as the fount of Afro-jazz.

Customer Reviews

This is a great Live Jazz Album. FIlter out the bad Ramsey Lewis because half of his music sounds like it should be in an elevator or waiting room. His live albums are usually the best. Don'tbe fooled by the sappy woodwinds and 80 synths, Ramsey Lewis is Great, u just need to know what version of the songs to Listein to

Classic Stuff

I first heard 'The In Crowd' as a Top 40 hit in 1965 and have owned the album and later CD since that time. It is one of my favorite albums of all time and I am not a major jazz fan.

All-time best love song

Is there a better love song than the Love Theme from Spartacus? It starts off soft and sweet, a gentle melody against the thunderstorm created by the bass notes of the piano slowly, slowly it builds and as the rhythm comes in you can hear the audience saying, "Oh, yeah!" Listen as the music builds to and builds until the keys are pounded! Then let the music slow down... and blow farther away until the last thunderclap. Ladies, does it sound like GOOD sex? That's because it is.

Lewis began studying the piano when he was four years old, and was soon accompanying the choir at Sunday...
