So We Would Know

So We Would Know

Tapping into a rich vein of 18th- and 19th-century hymnody, Treva Blomquist gives traditional sacred songs a new spin on So We Would Know. This Arkansas-based singer/songwriter has built a faithful following thanks to the purity of her voice and the honesty of her compositions. Here, she adapts familiar and lesser-known hymns to suit her folk-pop style—at times staying true to their original conceptions and at others taking a more contemporary approach. Tracks like “For the Beauty of the Earth” and “Pass Me Not” get an acoustic Patty Griffin–like treatment. By contrast, Blomquist brings a bluegrass-tinged intensity to “Ain’t No Grave” and “Run to Me My Lord” reminiscent of The Civil Wars’ recent albums. “When I Can Read My Title Clear” and “All That I Need” benefit from a slight (but effective) touch of R&B shading. Guitarist Ben Gortmaker, keyboardist Eric Quiram, and percussionist Erik Jaskowiak lend able support to Blomquist’s vocals and acoustic guitar. Fans of Christian artists like Sara Groves and Bethany Dillon—as well as secular folk acts like Feist and Beth Orton—will find a lot to like in these inviting, enraptured tracks.
