iTunes Editors’ Notes

Austin-based Black Joe Lewis knows how to play vintage blues and R&B, and for Electric Slave he's determined to scream and shout his way through some raw rock ‘n' roll. “Dar Es Salaam” dries up the sound long enough to hear a true stylist at work, as he traces the guitars that create a dark rock funk. “Young Girls,” on the other hand, turns up the reverb, and Lewis goes for broke and broker, screaming with little regard for how his voice will sing another song. “My Blood Ain’t Runnin’ Right” floats between influences such as Iggy Pop, the late Lux Interior of The Cramps, Jon Spencer, and other unrepentant garage rockers. The extended “Vampire” goes for a blues far beyond what most people dig as the blues. As his least restrained performance, Electric Slave is arguably his best—at least for the punk rock fans who are less about the blues and more about expressing yourself within the fewest guidelines possible.
