I Hate To Say This....

I think the 4 & 5 star marks are more about people excited to see her back in action than for the music on this disc. The album lacks continuity. Half the tracks belong on one kind of album, the other half a totally different kind of album. It should definitely NOT be categorized as "Rock" as it currently is on iTunes. I don't think these songs or the production on most of the tracks showcases her talents well at all. This is just not the sort of stuff I want to hear from her. The jazz is schlocky and dated and not in a good way. I don't hear passion. I hear sullen, subdued and muted. She is a formidable vocal and songwriting talent and this just does not show what she's capable of. I'm so so sorry to say this. But it is how I feel. I wanted desperately to love this but right now I don't even want to listen to it. I'm sure she's still great live but I would love to see her teamed up with a great producer who would work with her on the whole album not a mish-mash of 12 separate tracks. Or another songwriter. Linda Perry maybe? The co-writers, co-producers she has on this disc are well known and have been doing it for a long time. Maybe too long? With the exception of a few tracks, this is just not the genre I want to hear from her. I don't want straight-up pop music either. I want something organic, something she can breathe in and make her own. Most of these tracks just don't do that.

After ten long years, she has returned to bless us all!

Amazing Album

A long awaited comeback by Ms. Cole was well worth it. This highly reflective album has traces of folk, country and jazz, with a more subdued voice. The icing on the cake is the bonus iTunes track "Don't Miss Me." Other standouts are "Lovelight," which recalls a very 1990s mood and "I wanna kiss you" accompanied by Chris Botti on trumpet.

Paula Cole was one of the many female singer/songwriters who rose to prominence in the mid-'90s in the wake of alternative's commercial breakthrough. Drawing heavily from the ethereal, pretty sound of Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos, she created songs that relied equally on dreamy melodies and poetic, introspective lyrics. Although she continued recording music during the 2000s, Cole's career reached its peak in 1997, when both "I Don't Want to Wait" and "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone" cracked the...
