iTunes Review

Packed with prime cuts, Barbra Streisand’s Memories (1981) works well as a survey of her career highlights from the mid-‘70s through the early ‘80s. The tunes included on this album document her full transition from Broadway-style chanteuse to contemporary pop artist, able to interpret everything from the high-gloss disco of “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)” (a duet with Donna Summer) to the elegant piano rock of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” with ease and authority. The obvious big hits of the era are here, including such essentials as “Evergreen,” “The Way We Were” and the Neil Diamond duet “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers.” Equally as impressive are such lesser-known tunes as “Lost Inside of You,” heard as a solo Streisand performance rather than in its original form as a duet with Kris Kristofferson. Adding extra impact are two newly recorded tracks: a gloriously heartbreaking rendition of the Cats aria “Memory” and “Comin’ In and Out of Your Life,” a billowing pop ballad in classic Barbra mode. Taken together, these recordings reaffirm Streisand’s pre-eminent position among the great singers of her time.

Perfection

A voice that will never be duplicated

Barbra Streisand is amazing

If you have ever seen her classics yentl, Funny Girl, The Way We Were you know how AMAZING she is. She isnt fake either. Lots of girls have no voices and get theres voiced over. Hers is pure and amazing. She is one of my idols. She also didnt get any plastic surgery either. She has beauty on the inside and out. I adore her and if you listen to this you will too!

Coasting, Yes, A Rip-Off?? No!!

Barbra was in the middle of recording demos for her film "Yentl" and during those sessions recorded a few new tracks, three released here. Up to this point Barbra had a rather prolific catalog and so what if she wanted to reconfigure some of her biggest hits. "Memory" was very trendy in the 80's, she and Barry Manilow recorded somewhat different interpretations, Barbra's version "phases" out at the fade, she would return to this trick when she released "Somewhere" on her "Broadway" cd. "Comin' In And Out Of Your Life" was another big hit, I prefer Barbra's re-recording of "Lost Inside Of You" on this lp over the original duet with Kris Kristofferson from the "A Star Is Born" lp. Kris can't sing kids, he can't. The sound quality of this cd is pretty poor, it was one of the fist vinyl lp's to make it to this format and is a mere analog transfer with no attempt to turn up the volume. Some of these songs, especially the bigger hits, will find a home on the remastered "The Essential Barbra Streisand" collection.

Barbra Streisand's status as one of the most successful singers of her generation was remarkable not only because her popularity was achieved in the face of a dominant musical trend -- rock & roll -- which she did not follow, but also because she used her vocal skills as a mere stepping stone to other careers, as a stage and film actress and as a film director. Born in 1942 and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she struggled briefly as an actress and nightclub singer in New York during the early '60s...
