Album Review

Ever since bursting onto the scene in the late '80s with Chick Corea, guitarist Frank Gambale has been a frustration for fans and critics. Finding an appropriate musical setting for his unique jazz/metal approach has proved difficult over the course of his career. He has tried his hand at contemporary jazz, hard rock, pop/rock, and fusion, all to varying degrees of success, but Coming to Your Senses proves to be the perfect forum for his hybrid style. Here Gambale sounds like the mature, seasoned guitarist that he is, still with chops to spare, but with an improved harmonic sophistication coupled with Larry Carlton-type taste and restraint. The compositions are more interesting than on his previous efforts and are no longer simply vehicles for his extemporaneous solos or contrite pop. He is joined here by keyboardist Hans Zermhuelen, heralded bassist Ricc Fierabracci, and four different drummers. This is familiar territory, but a first for Gambale in that he has finally combined all of his talents into a cohesive whole.

Customer Reviews

The official review is right: this recording provides the perfect canvas for Gambale's magnificent guitar playing. It's only a touch bit on the "pop jazz" side, but the writing and playing more than compensate to raise this far above the level of elevator jazz. The compositions are sophisticated and captivating, with many sweet lines and high points. The players are all top notch and evenly matched, so there are no weak links here. Gambale of course takes center stage, and his range of musical invention is breathtaking. This guy just never runs out of great new ideas, and he seldom falls back on familiar riffs. His rapid-fire delivery and speed are only part of the package, and there are so many pleasing parts that you'll want to listen to it all over again as soon as you've listened to it the first time. Bass, keys and drums are all up to the task and provide equally excellent solo spots throughout. Even standard jazz fans will find much to appreciate here. If you're a Gambale fan, this is a must have. If you haven't heard of him, but love great electric guitar, this is highly recommended listening. Sublime.

Coming To Your Senses - Frank Gambale

Coming To Your Senses is right, what a treat for the senses. Good music stimulates the brain in a way that nothing else can. Gambale's music on this album has reached a new height that few can reach. The rich guitar texture in layers that resemble the finest vocal harmonies are so addictive I just can't get enough. I have listened to this album over and over and I always hear something new, that's a sign of genius. One of the best albums in my collection. 5 stars *****.
