Album Review

The Commodores' early years were spent on the Southern funk circuit, where their energetic, catchy tunes, and keyboard-oriented funk made them both a college and a radio staple. They scored seminal hits with "Brick House" and "Slippery When Wet," although it became apparent quite early that lead vocalist Lionel Richie also had a bright future as a solo balladeer, with such tunes as "Easy" signaling his future on adult contemporary and Quiet Storm/urban contemporary radio. This collection highlights early up-tempo and ballad hits.

Customer Reviews

Classic! As good as it gets.

Ahhh, back when songs actually had melodies and groups weren't manufactured by the press to fit a phoney image. I remember when some R&B DJ's complained because the Commodores didn't sound "Black" enough! But they blazed a trail that made it easier for others to cross over later. Respect is due.

The Commodores were exceptional! They were so very talented not just one of them but everyone of them. The names you don't hear Thomas McClary, Ronald Lapread, Milan Williams, William King, Walter Orange (Brickhouse). Some names may be mispelled but I'm a fan not a historian. Lionel Richie was the leader, but he was surrounded by his college friends who were incredibly talented. Also the Mean Machine which was their brass section. I went to their concerts and was fully entertained!
