Editors’ Notes

This box set contains King Diamond’s first five albums in their entirety. Together they constitute one of the single greatest runs in heavy metal history. While many hard rock bands had for years turned to horror stories for inspiration, King Diamond took it to a whole new level by crafting albums that in their vividness and imagination surpassed even movies. Each of these five albums—Fatal Portrait, Abigail, Them, Conspiracy, and The Eye—contains its own unique story, outlined by the eponymous vocalist King Diamond, who inhabits every character in each story and also takes on the role of guide through the spirit world. The band’s genius is that they didn’t just slap pieces of a story onto preexisting riffs; each album writhes with creative energy, moving through the tempestuous elaborations in each individual narrative. The albums contain some of the most complex songs in heavy metal history, but the band storm through every sharp turn without missing a note. Aside from King’s brilliantly shrill vocals and the fulminating guitar work of Andy LaRocque, the secret hero of these albums is drummer Mikkey Dee, who provides the furnace that keeps these intricate anthems burning.

Customer Reviews

King Diamond rules!!

This guy is just insane and these early albums are the best of his catalog by far. I love all these records but "Abigail, Them, and Conspiracy" are three of the best metal albums by anyone. His vocal style is so unique and the fact that he plays out stories on his albums and plays different characters is killer. If you like this then definitely check out his even earlier stuff with "Merciful Fate" but as far as his solo stuff this collection is untouchable.

Definitely the best albums in his catalog

Abigail, Then and Conspiracy are 3 of the best metal albums ever. King's vocals are so powerful and these stories are so well told. I've probably listened to all the albums in this collection hundreds of times and I never get sick of them. Do yourself a favor and make this purchase now!

Not complete

This would totally be worth it, if the albums featured here were complete, which they are not.

Widely regarded as the finest vocalist in all of metal (who possesses a multi-octave range), theatrical rocker King Diamond first rose to prominence as a member of Mercyful Fate before launching a solo career on his own. Born Kim Bendix Petersen in Denmark on June 14, 1956, the future King Diamond was originally drawn to theatrically based hard rock due to such trailblazers as Alice Cooper, and soon began fronting local bands in the '70s, including a punk metal outfit called the Brats. Shortly thereafter,...
