Non-Rested Laurels!

To have Sergei Prokofiev as a Grandfather has got to be a blessing and a curse. I would imagine in some respects it could be either like Sean Lennon being embraced by the hipsters as pop music’s underground darling. In other respects it could be like Julian Lennon’s big brush off by the record industry twenty years ago leading him down the unfair road to obscurity and Trivial Pursuit questions. In the opinions of the unforgiving and frankly unfair music listener, a “legacy” artist like Gabriel Prokofiev will never be accepted or appreciated for his own talent and ability. He will always be compared to his Grandfather. Still, having a name like Prokofiev would on the other hand open some doors that might have otherwise been locked to him.

Rather than rest on his laurels and have the primarily stodgy classical music community steer his trajectory, Gabriel Prokofiev has not only managed to become a fantastic and exciting composer, he has surrounded himself with numerous other young musical visionaries and started his own group to play their sounds for the world.

“NONCLASSICAL: Originals and Remixes Vol #1” is a fantastic collection of works by the artists who make up this new collective. The first disc contains original works by Prokofiev, Consortium5, Powerplant, Mercury Quartet and the Azalea Ensemble among others. These are not merely small pieces of interest in a world full of ears content to sit back with familiar works by Beethoven and Chopin. These are vital and inspiring thrusts of energy that should by all rights stand along side the music that inspired and drove these young composers to start creating their own voices.

The second disc embraces an even more modern/popular approach by filling itself with remixed versions of many of the pieces from disc one. DJ’s reinterpreting orchestral works may have once been thought to be outlandish and unacceptable. This volume stands as a testament to validate the often debated and disregarded art form.

While it may never be the old school’s favorite cup of tea, it isn’t really meant to be. Music we take for granted today was often groundbreaking and disturbing to many listeners at the time it first debuted. People willing to open their ears and minds to this kind of approach to classical music might just be surprised at how good it really is. Art is in the ear of the beholder after all. NONCLASSICAL is a project and a label that is truly making beautiful art. I for one am excited to hear what they do next!
