I love Anne-Sophie Mutter
The music in this album is, of course, great, but the performance by Mutter is earth-shattering. I'm surprised the violin she plays isn't crushed under the immense energy she pours into it. A very special album. Pick this if you want the best recording of Brahms's Violin Concerto and Double Concerto.
I have heard many recording of Brahms Violin Concerto by different artists (Oistrakh, Rosand, Perlman), but somehow I always come back to listening to this recording. Mutter is truly an excellent violinist and with Karajan and the Berliners backing her, this recording is truly spectacular. This recording so lively and the start of the third movement brings me so much joy, unmatched by any recording I have heard so far.
However, I do not like this performance of the Double Concerto nearly as much which isn't nearly as exciting. However, Mutter's performance of the Violin Concerto makes this purchase worthwhile many times over. Oistrakh is who I enjoy closest to this performance if you are looking for alternatives. He has one which he does with Klemperer which is also spectacular.
