Serkin plays the Emperor concerto in a way I can't describing much beyond thrilling and glorious. He follows all the articulation, dynamics, and still adds a very personal touch to the piece. Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, considered by many the world's best orchestra, shine in this recording. I have listened to so many recordings and this one tops all of them. Even the first measure is better than other recordings because of the cresendo into the piano cadenza.
For those who haven't heard these pieces before, they are a true inspiration. The 5th concerto is my favorite and it inspires me every time I listen to it.
