The Smiths punctuated the tone on the soundtrack to 2009’s (500) Days of Summer, but The Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition” proved to be the most salient song with Dougie Mandagi’s elongated androgynous inflections and the band recalling Joshua Tree-era U2. This Melbourne quartet's debut album pulses with the Britpop cool of Coldplay on songs like “Love Lost,” a mini-epic of an opener where guitars rhythmically throb to approximate heart palpations — though here Mandagi’s versatile voice bends up, as he croons soulfully similar to Mick Hucknall of Simply Red. The following “Fader” treads a similar path with a more driving beat that begs to be danced to. And the darker, starker hues of “Fools” seem to come from a place inspired by the melodic complexities of Radiohead’s better moments on In Rainbows. Conditions doesn’t have a British sound by accident. London producer Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, UNKLE, Adele) gave his Midas touch to an approach that was already anglophilic, save for “Science Of Fear,” an anthemic standout that features drum programming by DJ Shadow.

More Than Just Music

Most music can be listened to and appreciated, however, this album has gone further for me by embedding itself into my life. After listening to this album consistently for the last two months (I first bought it directly from The Temper Trap's website) it has seeped in, latched onto my soul, and now reverberates deep into the core of my being.

Conditions has been the soundtrack of my life for the last two months and I know it will continue to do so moving forward. The rich soundscapes created by this Australian band have provided an unforgettable backdrop to moments I will never forget.

There is a wide variety of musical sounds and styles within this album and they all come together to create something where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. From the catchy "Love Lost," to the haunting "Science of Fear," to the emotion-invoking "Sweet Disposition," to the makes-me-want-to-sing-along "Down River," this album delivers.

Highly recommend purchasing the whole album, locking yourself in a room, and allow the sounds of The Temper Trap to take you on a journey again and again.

Love it!

If Modest Mouse, The Killers and Explosions in the Sky had a baby, the Temper Trap would be it! Amazing, melodic instrumentals.

With their choir boy vocals and panoramic pop/rock sound, the Temper Trap began building an audience in Melbourne, Australia, where the band first rose to local acclaim after playing St. Jerome's Laneway Festival in March 2006. The Temper Trap released their debut EP that same year, and word of the group's potential soon spread to other continents. Veteran British producer Jim Abbiss (who previously worked on the Arctic Monkeys' debut) saw enough promise in the Temper Trap's material...
