His last solo album was 1997’s Wildlife Dictionary; the past fourteen years have allowed Jeffreys to stockpile his best material. As a result, The King of In Between is an action-packed collection of tunes that never hits a weak patch. Bob Dylan’s longtime right-hand man, multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell, creates settings that are half-way between the neo-classic rock ‘n’ roll of Graham Parker to ‘70s soul, lighthearted reggae and bluesy rock ‘n’ roll. “The Contortionist” and “Coney Island Winter” are inspired meditations on Jeffreys’ life. “All Around the World” swaggers with a great man’s style. “’Til John Lee Hooker Calls Me” riffs like a pure Hooker boogie. “Rock and Roll Music” plays it like 1950s, well, rock ‘n’ roll. “Love Is Not a Cliché” works up a swampy electric blues. “In God’s Waiting Room” throws in an acoustic blues. “Roller Coaster Town” adds a touch of ska, Brooklyn style. Garland Jeffreys can still do it all.
