New Straight Edge Anthems, and More

"Iron Spiral" is such a gloriously brutal, ripping song to open this minuscule-length LP. In the heyday of mixed bills, you could imagine a ten-minute Coke Bust set of blistering powerviolence immediately before a (perhaps) more well-known, opposite-genre band such as, I don't know, Noothgrush. As it is, Coke Bust are indeed legendary in their live performances, and they've played a lot over the years. On these songs, vocalist Nicktape sounds more throaty and belligerent than ever; it's a vocal bellow laced with vitriol, and must be physically exhausting to achieve (seriously, dude sounds like he's going to bust a gut)! The classic black-and-white cover seems like a nod to the old Slap-A-Ham visual aesthetic, complete with gnarly typography and a possible statement on jingoistic patriotism. The raging guitars here are lean and mean, the drums blasting relentlessly until they crash down into slower parts, and those feral vocals make you wish you could start a circle pit in your own living room. Along with others, Coke Bust have innovated a new straight edge, sounding almost more like the fastcore of Magrudergrind than some dubious youth crew retread (see, for example, the lesser bands of the '90's). This is tough hardcore punk, able to hit just as hard as Nails, only faster and without the Suffocation worship of that band's "Abandon All Life" LP (which slayed, even though it was also totally ridiculous). You probably won't mind the short playing time here, because "Confined" begs for instant repeat in full. More, please; let's go for a double LP! I'm kidding, but one thing's no joke: this is a vicious album, one of 2013's standouts.
