Congo Square is very much in the spirit of Teena Marie’s work as a whole. The album’s warm, sensuous grooves showcase the singer/songwriter’s sultry whispers and passionate vocal flights, mixing contemporary urban touches with a classic R&B vibe. As before, Marie’s lyrics are at once witty and seductive, with “Ear Candy 101” and “The Pressure” offering some particularly tasty bedroom patter. Her wordslinging on “You Baby” rekindles the erotic charge of her classic hits “Square Biz” and “Lovergirl.” When she’s not casting love-spells, she salutes Americans in uniform (“Soldier”), pays homage to Coretta Scott King (“Ms. Coretta”) and toasts the musical heritage of New Orleans (the title track). Marie shares the spotlight with daughter Rose LeBeau on the sweetly funky “Milk n’ Honey” and duets with Howard Hewett on the caressing “Lover’s Lane.” The closing number “The Rose n' Thorn” is an aching torch ballad in the style of Sarah Vaughn that serves as a poignant coda to Marie’s own recording legacy. It was released a year and a half before her death.

Lady T is back & better then ever. I can't wait to see her in Philly for the Jazz Fest. It's time to give her a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. Faith Evans vocals on this album show maturity and the sound is so rich and clear. I love "Soldier" with Shirley Murdock that was a surprise & a dynamic duet. "Milk N Honey" is hot! and I am about to practice some baby making to"Lover's Lane" which is a classic already & long over due Howard sounds sooo sexy. Teena brought it on this LP. She's the queen of R&B Funk! No one does it like her. O yeah the base lines are tight!

No white artist sang R&B more convincingly than Teena Marie, whose big, robust vocals were so black-sounding that when she was starting out, some listeners wondered if she was a light-skinned African-American. Marie grew up in west Los Angeles in a neighborhood that was nicknamed "Venice Harlem" because of its heavy black population. The singer/songwriter/producer was in her early twenties when, around 1977, she landed a job at Motown Records. It was at Motown that she met her mentor and paramour-to-be,...
