Customer Reviews

Having performed under the direction of Dr. Mallory Thompson for a year when I was in college, I was delighted to listen to these recordings and once again hear the impeccable sense of timing, spirit, and pure humanity that she can bring out in a wind ensemble. I highly recommend this album and suspect that other recordings produced by this ensemble will be of the same fine quality.

A worthy purchase

I only purchased the Symphony in B flat on this record, but it is a fine recording. I wouldnt go far as to compare the low brass to the Chicago Symphony just yet. The Horns are amazing in this recording (Northwestern has one of the best Horn studios in the country) and the principle trumpet and Alto Sax do an excellent job on the duet in the second movement, although the trumpet does overshadow the slightly thin tone of the sax. To me the 2nd movement is the best part about this record. Although there are a few runs that are not crystal clear, but by and large the ensemble play, articulation and sense of timing by the woodwinds is spectacular. The last movement is very good. Articulation and rhythm are exceptional. I would like to hear more clarity in the low brass personally in certain sections. In the final bars there is surprisingly a little bit of mess with the woodwinds, but is not very noticable. Overall a great recording.

O Magnum Mysterium, Best Recoriding Out There

This recording of O Magnum Mysterium is by far the greatest recording of this piece I have ever heard. The middle section with the chordal support from the low brass is absolutely phenomenal, a must for any wind player.
