Album Review

Considered to be one of the founders of the progressive metal genre made popular by bands like Dream Theater and Fates Warning, Watchtower did not stay together long enough to reap the benefits of their creativity. Their first recording, Energetic Disassembly, hinted at their innovations and talent, but it was Control and Resistance that marked the arrival of a fresh and important voice in the history of both progressive rock and heavy metal. Drawing heavily from bands such as Rush, Queensryche, Metallica, Yngwie Malmsteen, and fusion bands, Watchtower carved out a distinctive sound by combining the most extreme elements of their influences. The result was a series of complex, dark, and heavy songs that would eventually become the blueprint for progressive metal. Guitarist Ron Jarzombek, who replaced Billy White, brings a Holdsworth influence with him, which adds to the music's diversity. While averting commercial success, the band is typically cited as groundbreaking by their peers. The music herein may sound dated, especially the falsetto vocals of Alan Tecchio, but there is enough here to appreciate and enjoy both from a historical and musical perspective.

Great Band Live

I saw them live in 1987 or 1988 with Rigor Mortis in Dallas,TX. At the time I thought they were a great band (still do) and had a great sound. At the time I was listening to bands like Helloween, Malmsteen, Joe Sat. and other great shredders. I think I remember there being some self released albums that they were selling at the show. Wish I would have bought them. The new song sounds really good and takes me back to the late 80's and all the great metal that was coming out.

Thank you Myspace...

We all know Watchtower, everyones favorite progressive Texas thrash band, right? Some of us lived through the 80s and maybe heard of them, and some of us just found them on the Internets when looking for cool music. Either way, these guys were leagues ahead of many other 80s bands, more innovative and much more relevant in the world. These guys sang about the issues and the problems of our society.
When I found out about this band, their unique sound really hit me in songs like The Fall Of Reason and Control And Resistance. Their debut was also amazing thrash metal, but their sophomore release really goes into deeper musical territory. This is also evident in songs like Mayday In Kiev and Life Cycles. The rest of the songs are good also.
Alot of people will hate this band and point out they sound annoying: my sister got a huge headache when I tortured her after I got it, but you should be able to enjoy it if you love progressive metal, and you don't mind high pitched vocals, audible bass or Colaluca's electronic drums.
The Fall Of Reason and The Eldritch, I would have to say are the most accessible songs here.

Supreme prog thrash. Please get their debut, Energetic Disassembly, on here soon.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s

Watchtower remains on the most over-the-top prog metal outfits of all-time. Their songs often came off as excuses to shred away and show off their member's instrumental prowess, and although the group remains quite obscure, they (along with Dream Theater) spawned countless musical offspring by the '90s — Spock's Beard, Dali's Dilemma, Cairo, Ice Age, Royal Hunt, etc. The Texas-based band first came together in the early '80s, drawing inspiration from such established challenging rockers as...
