Album Review

In the spring of 2001, INOTOF Records released Minnesota singer and songwriter Sara Groves' project Conversations. Previously issued independently, the album is a combination of CCM, acoustic folk, and inspirational. An element of Groves' music, which can be compared to fellow CCM artist Nichole Nordeman, is the honesty and vulnerability she communicates lyrically. Songs such as "How Is It Between Us" and "Hello Lord" address the issue of distance in her relationship with God, while "Generations" examines the consequences of present actions on future events. The project also includes a live recording of the song "Tent in the Center of Town."

If Lisa Loeb wanted to sing for Jesus...

...Her spot would already be taken. Yup, Sara Groves sounds alot like Lisa Loeb, both acoustically & vocally. But there are moments (usually the folksy-fun ones) where she reminds me of My Dad's old Cynthia Clawson records. (And in her prime, when she sang original material--not those endless hymn-repackagings--C.C. was a force to be reckoned with.) There are also alot of Shawn Colvin moments too, in the chord progressions and the wry truthful statements. So what does that give us? An adult pop/folk artist. Like Loeb & Colvin, Groves's songs require you to think. (So you probably won't find any of them on your teenager's iPod.) But unlike Loeb & Colvin, Groves's songs are accessible. I mean, I still don't understand half of what Lisa Loeb was trying to say back in 1995! But everytime I sit and think about what Sara Groves is saying, I'm brought face to face with a glittering shard of mature Christianity. No, I don't like every song on the CD, and I'm not here to tell you Groves makes no missteps, but I am saying this is much more than "ear-candy." Every fan wants to hold up the musicians they like and say, "These guys are totally sincere about God and/or worshipping God." Sometimes in their look, their sound, their image, or their banal shallow lyrics they seem to fade into the world; if we're honest with ourselves we just want them to be Christian so we can keep listening. Groves is not of that stripe. She is one of the few contemporary artists that give evidence of a real personal walk with God. She does not just mention God and check the box. She goes upward and inward into who God is and how he works. She looks at the church--beauty and blemishes--and calls us to see it clearly. It's a whole different level from just naming the name of Christ; it's the separation II Timothy 2:19 calls us to--it's truly ministry what she does for her listeners. As a songwriter, I can't imagine what she'd have to say if she didn't have a deep personal walk with God. That's the fount from which her message springs. It explains why she's not outrageously popular...and that's a sad statement about us, unwilling to think about our Lord, only willing to bob our heads and tap our toes. Support this artist. Pray that her spiritual well won't be poisoned by Satan. (And do yourself a favor--go buy "Add to the Beauty" and read all the lyrics.)

Speaking the truth has never been done better!

I have had this cd since it came out and it is still my absolute favorite! Jan 2005-Dec 2007

Top 25 Christian Albums Ever

I cannot say enough good about this album. Not every song is a 10. But many of them are. She is spot on with both the Word and the world. This music is fresh. God give us more like her. And more albums like Conversations. Thank you Sara. Thank you Jesus.

Sara Groves, a former high-school teacher in her native Rosemont, Minnesota, burst onto the gospel scene at the dawn of the new millennium with her fresh vocals and spiritual songwriting. She's been compared to the likes of Shawn Colvin and Rich Mullins; however, Groves defines her own musical demeanor. She cannot be limited to one exact label, for her contemporary Christian hooks also meld into delicate pop. Signed to Epic, Groves issued her debut, Conversations, in early 2001, followed by a string...
