Editors’ Notes

Backed by his frequent collaborators the Roots Radics, Gregory Isaacs sounds cooler than ever on the 1982 lovers rock staple Night Nurse. Whether asking for forgiveness on “Objection Overruled,” hoping love can continue on “Sad to Know (You’re Leaving),” or searching for sexual healing on the title track, his relaxed delivery is subtle and sublime. These are slow jams of the highest order—and their polished roots vibe and gentle synth flourishes only add to their quiet energy.

Get This Album!

Back when I was first getting into the genre, I asked a knowledgable friend to recommend a good reggae album by an artist other than Bob Marley. "Night Nurse" was his immediate response. I bought it and it instantly became one of my favorite albums, reggae or otherwise. There aren't too many albums you can put on and listen the whole way through without skipping over the less-than-stellar tracks, but Night Nurse is solid from top to bottom. Plus, the version I bought didn't have the 4 bonus "dub" tracks that i-Tunes offers here. If you want to expand your reggae repertoire beyond Bob Marley, this is the album to start with. One listen and you'll know why Gregory Isaacs is known as the "Cool Ruler."

Cool Laid Back Grooves

This album is something else. The laid back grooves just don't quit from start to finish. Perfect on a summer day with a cool drink and chillin' in the shade. Cool Ruler you're beautiful, baby!
