iTunes Review

With the thundering opening riff of "Top Notch," Manchester Orchestra signal the heavy, guitar-driven direction of Cope. A flurry of cymbal crashes, pinch harmonics, palm mutes, and throaty roars quickly follow, filling each song with unprecedented urgency and force. While distorted hooks and explosive drums take center stage on the quintet’s fourth album, frontman Andy Hull overlays it all with ample vulnerability, brought to life through his signature blend of earnest lyrics and painstakingly perfected harmonies. As usual, Hull explores a range of bleak topics, but the restless tempo and lively choruses here are more concerned with headbanging than reflection. The relentless guitar onslaught and solemn lyrics stitch together like a minotaur, both unapologetically fierce and human.

Who needs record companies?

This album is a fine example of a band doing it their way, without a record company to hinder artistic vision. This album has way more balls than Simple Math. The vocals are simply spectacular, as we've come to expect. Enjoy it loudly.

Lean, muscular, and ferocious.

Manchester Orchestra set out to make a rock record that was brutal from beginning to end. They stated repeatedly, that the intention was to make the kind of record that doesn’t really exist today. My worry, and I hope theirs, was that they would abandon the melodies and earnestness that makes them a ‘good band’. They obviously took that into consideration, and the melodies soar. As a result, COPE is the most lean, muscular and ferocious rock record since Nirvana’s ‘In Utero'.

Based in Atlanta, Georgia, the indie rock outfit grew out of songs that Hull had begun writing while attending high school. Encouraged by positive response, he opted for home schooling during his senior year, which afforded him enough time to compose and record in the studio. Friends began collaborating with...
