Soundtrack for California circa '60

This is a peek into the early period of the careers of two artists of diametric renown: Chicago-born nimble-fingered pianist Jack Wilson, an uber-musician (26 at the time of this 1963 recording) who didn’t garner much recognition before he died recently (October 5, 2007), but worked with everybody from Jackie McLean to Sonny & Cher; and vibraphonist Roy Ayers (22 at the time), “the godfather of Acid Jazz.” Supporting the two “youngsters,” are veteran bassist Al McKibbon and drummer Nick Martinis – both solid keepers of time and swing. Unlike many compositions whose titles are so abstract that you have to drop acid to get the artist’s meaning, Wilson’s tunes seem to appropriately accommodate their descriptions and moods with slick and subtle arrangements. Word to the wise: buckle your seatbelt, before you check out “Jackleg"...
