modern classic

Corigliano's new Red Violin Concerto is destined, I think, to become one of the great concertos of our time. Based on the successful score Coigliano wrote to 'The Red Violin,' it is fashioned into a spine-tingling concerto. There's something here for everyone: for those afraid of 'modern' music, there are nice, singable melodies; for those who enjoy some drama, there's lots of 'scraping' and playing on the fingerboard in the strings; big brass sections, and lots of percussion. I was priviliged to attend the concert at which this album was recorded, and the album brings back memories of the amazing experience!


Corigliano has created a beautiful and dramatic work for Johsua Bell. The main theme (from the movie) is achingly haunting. Bell negotiates some cruel passages with apparent ease. The Violin Sonata also receives a powerful performance. Excellent sound, too.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra was established as a municipal ensemble with funding from local government agencies.
