Great Fun!

Oh my! Cotton Patch Gospel! What a piece of news that´s it is now on iTunes. Unless you have seen the show, it may not have the same response as I have (unless you are a dyed in the wool Chapin fan). I´ve not only seen it on stage but also directed it. What a wonderful theatrical experiences! AND recently found another production on DVD. LOVE IT! FUN! DELIGHTFUL! and just plain "Jubilation," for me.

Cotton Patch Gospel

This is the soundtrack of a stage musical based (mostly) on the gospel of Matthew set in modern-day (well... 1970's) rural Georgia. When seen live, it is a phenomenally moving piece of theatre. Unfortunately, because it was never released on (nor remastered for) CD, the sound quality of these recordings is pretty disappointing, but the material is absolutely stellar! Harry Chapin's music runs the gamut from tender to jubilant, all with a bluegrass feel and lush harmonies throughout. If you ever have the opportunity to see a production of it, don't miss it. And thank you to iTunes for making this wonderful album (very long out of print) available to those of us who have worn out the cassette. (Which is why the artwork looks like it does... it was only available on cassette for decades.)

Years Active: '70s, '80s

Harry Chapin's career as a popular singer/songwriter was cut short by an auto accident in 1981, yet he left behind a series of recordings that his fans continue to treasure decades after his death. Chapin was never a critically acclaimed singer/songwriter. Critics accused him of over-sentimentalizing his subjects and attaching heavy-handed morals to his socially aware story-songs; the heavily orchestrated arrangements that accompanied many of his songs didn't help his case with the critics, either....
