Album Review

A strong debut from the Atlanta rock band that is by no means mired in the dodgy, processed production sounds that marred so many records released in this period. A cross between punky hard rock and bluegrass, the band would later refine their direction, but the title track and "Another Scarlet Butterfly" are great showcases for songwriter Kinney's budding career as the voice for a new generation of Southern rockers.

One of the best!

This has always been my favorite drivin' n' cryin' album. I can remember their incredible live shows in Atlanta from the late 80's and early 90's. They were THE top band in the Southeast at the time. The Black Crows may have had more national airplay and MTV videos, but drivin' n' cryin' was the top billing in Atlanta and Athens. You could often find them showing up for an impromptu live show in Athens and they guys from R.E.M would show up and join them. This album is very diverse and you can hear it's echos throughout their later works. Fast paced and hard charging yet it still has some tender slower songs that work really well with the overall album. Any fan of Southern Rock won't be disappointed.

One of my favorite albums of all time. Glad to see it here!

Best ever

Best band ever and this is one of the better albums. 2nd only to Mystery Road in my humble opinion!

Originally made up of singer/songwriter Kevn Kinney on guitar and vocals, Tim Nielsen on bass, and Paul Lenz on drums, the band's debut was the timeless hard rock/bluegrass fusion Scarred But Smarter (1986) on 688 Records, the label that grew out of the punk-era Atlanta club of the same name. The band followed...
