Album Review

Coalesce's sound is difficult to describe; it's not quite hardcore punk, not quite alternative metal, not quite grindcore or death metal — just extreme and furiously chaotic. But, at the same time, 012: Revolution in Just Listening is quite musical, its progressive song structures and odd time signatures revealing themselves more and more with each listen. The band negotiates its tricky compositions with chops to burn, delivering ferociously cathartic performances underscored by the assaultive yet textured noise of their instrumental work. Occasional sections can wander away from the focused intensity of the majority of the album, but overall, 012: Revolution in Just Listening rewards attentive listening.

solid, innovative

i am new to coalesce, and bought this album on a whim. i was not dissapointed. you can see why many of the newer hardcore acts sing this bands praise. they were definitely groundbreakers. with witty lyrics and an amazing scream this band has won me over. whenever i get more money i plan to buy the rest of their discography.

left wanting more!

the rest of the "hardcore/punk" world is missing its biggest asset, the quantum physics of hardcore (if you will)! this band is by far the most original and best thing to happen to heavy fu*king music since the satanic worship of the head band of vince neil! COALESCE WILL RETURN TO RECLAIM THEIR THROWN!

Amazing Record

A great final effort from a great band. This record however was only the beginning in an explosion (that's still happening) of "mathcore". 20 years since this genre was created by Botch and these guys, you now see bands like Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and The Mars Volta playing to sold out crowds and selling millions of records worldwide. As good as these current bands are, I want the originals back!!! Botch has long since disbanded and Coalesce hasn't released a follow up record to this one! LET 2014 BE THE RETURN OF COALESCE!!!

Formed: Kansas City, MO

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Coalesce's music has consistently pushed the boundaries of the hardcore and metal genres, forging a mind-boggling obsession with strange, shifting tempos with power, noise, groove, and a creativity paralleled only by the band's peers in Dillinger Escape Plan and Botch. The origins of Coalesce can be traced back to a band called Breach — a group not to be confused with the European outfit that shares their name. Breach formed in January of 1994 with Jes Steineger on guitar, Stacy Hilt on bass,...
