iTunes Review

JJ Grey hails from a place in Florida populated with meth cooks, ex-cons, fugitives, and hardworking blue-collar folks trying to find grace within it all. The songs on this 2007 album rise from that place. They’re upheld on sturdy blasts of Stax-y R&B-soul-funk and bare-boned swamp rock. At times Grey has a Southern novelist’s eye for languid existences (the hard-life claustrophobia on “Turpentine” is inescapable), and he always shows great taste in music. He nods to Link Wray (“Footsteps”), Sly Stone (“War”), Otis Redding (“A Woman”), and Tony Joe White (“Mississippi”). And he’s all Van Zandt (Ronnie and Townes) on “On Palastine.”

Customer Reviews

Does not disappoint!

JJ and the boys have done it again. Big, fat slabs of greasy, chicken-fried, funkin' front porch soul served up to sats-sify! Bon appetit . . .

Swamp Blues With Funked Up Soul

Another fabulously toe-tapping release from MOFRO. JJ Grey's voice will take over your body and have it swaying to the sweet beat that is always part of a MOFRO song. "Country Ghetto" adds a horn section on some of songs adding yet another layer of sound. Sit back and's MOFRO TIME!!!

Another One

Three for Three. Three albums and they all rock the house. Country Ghetto does not disappoint. They are even better live. Check 'em out in a city near you!!!!!!!

Although Mofro is based in the Florida city of Jacksonville, near where JJ Grey and Daryl Hance grew up, the band actually formed across the Atlantic in London. The Floridians were in Great Britain to work on a recording contract that ended up going sour. While in London, the two musicians made the acquaintance of Nathan Shepherd, a keyboard player from Down Under, and Fabrice Quentin, a bassist who hails from France. Shepherd and Quentin joined them for a short time under the Mofro moniker. Unfortunately,...
