Album Review

In addition to his solo piano concerts and the American group he led that featured tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, Keith Jarrett was also busy in the mid-'70s with his European band, a quartet comprised of Jan Garbarek on tenor and soprano, bassist Palle Danielsson, and drummer Jon Christensen. Due to the popularity of the haunting "My Song," this album is the best known of the Jarrett-Garbarek collaborations and it actually is their most rewarding meeting on record. Jarrett contributed all six compositions and the results are relaxed and introspective yet full of inner tension.

Country

This is the one piece that drew me into Keith Jarrett's music, and into jazz in general. Mr. Jarrett played a variation of it on Saturday Night Live in what must have been the show's first season. I remember it to this day. The dialogue between the players is simply outstanding as the melody flows graciously as each performer, in turn, casts a subtle spell on the listener. I don't have the words to do this piece justice, really. After all these years, it is still my favorite jazz number.

A "desert island album"

If I could only take a handful of albums with me on a desert island to have for the rest of my life, this would be one on them. Brilliant writing, outstanding musicianship.

Timeless Beauty, 30 years on ....

For those of you who may be only somewhat familiar with the vast canon of Keith Jarrett, and consequently prejudge this recording as another example of his more (typical) free form playing style, I have three words for you: STOP AND LISTEN! This is probably one of the most if not the most accessible of Jarrett's recordings. This album is, in a word, beautiful. Recorded on the hip and groundbreaking ECM label back in the late 1970's, this album proves that Keith Jarrett does indeed respect good melody and is capable of adhering to it while still providing a solid glimpse of his ability to expound on a theme, and generously share equal improv time with another soloist, in this case Jan Garbarek on alto sax. The quartet plays beautiful melodies, and the way Jan Garbarek's alto sax sings on this album can bring you to tears. The rhythm section of Palle Danielsson on bass and Jon Christensen on percussion provides the perfect canvas for the voices of Jarrett and Garbarek. My personal favorites are the title cut, Country, and The Journey Home. The harmonic piano work on My Song in particular is simply gorgeous. Mercifully, Mandala is the only free form track, more typical of the direction that Jarrett would continue to take in the majority of his successive recordings. In my opinion, it really does not belong on this album, but certainly should not prevent anyone from enjoying the other 80% of the tunes. I have been a jazz fan since around the time this album was released (1978). This recording, along with another ECM release that same year - Pat Metheny Group's "White Album" - was responsible for opening my ears and mind to what has turned out to be an amazing journey of musical discovery and much joy. A must have for a well-rounded jazz collection.

Pianist, composer, and bandleader Keith Jarrett is one of the most prolific, innovative, and iconoclastic musicians to emerge from the late 20th century. As a pianist (though that is by no means the only instrument he plays) he literally changed the conversation in jazz by introducing an entirely new aesthetic regarding solo improvisation in concert. Though capable of playing in a wide variety of styles, Jarrett is deeply grounded in the jazz tradition. He has recorded nearly 80 albums...
