piece to musics

came across Tharaud's Bach recording by chance... a revelation; now his selection of Couperin pieces which is the same; I knew them only as a purist ie played on period harpsichords ;loved it from the first listen;fine fingered without being gooey-soppy, full of moods you can feel even without looking at the name of the piece;all in finesse and mastered delicacy without foppishness. a delight to the ears

Beautiful Couperin pieces played on the piano. Love this collection. Alexandre Tharaud is an outstanding, accomplished pianist.

I agree with tora-bi that Couperin's music simply does not and cannot work on the piano. Consider the title piece of the album. Le Tic-Toc-Choc is a "piéce croisée" meaning one hand on the upper keyboard and one on the lower, playing in the same register. The contrast of timbre between the two different strings as well as the effect of crossing the unisons is essential to the music. The piano simply cannot create these effects. Playing Couperin on the piano is as ridiculous as playing Chopin on the harpsichord. In fact, I wish someone would make such an attempt; perhaps it might illustrate how much one does injustice to the music to play it on an instrument for which it was neither conceived nor intended. M. Tharaud's abilities as a pianist are impressive, especially in playing Le Tic-Tic-Choc on one keyboard. But the effort does indeed fall flat. I am reminded of Louis XIV's comment after hearing a one man band perform: "What this man does is very difficult, but it is not pleasing." Voila!
